PARIS CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT AT 50
This year , Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport turns 50 . Initially named Paris Nord , it opened in 1974 to relieve congestion at Orly Airport . The French government selected Paul Andreu to design the hub , which featured a distinctive circular terminal . By 1981 , the airport had two runways and handled 8 million passengers annually .
Growth led to expansions . Terminal 2 opened in 1982 , followed by additional halls through 2003 . Terminal 3 launched in 1990 for charter flights . A third runway was added in 1999 . The airport adopted its current name in 2000 , honouring France ’ s wartime leader .

He adds : “ The support team is a key asset here , plus you have to build a stable project team that has expertise because implementing a digitalised procurement system takes time and you need everyone together on this long journey .”
