DEFENCE CONTRACTS COVER far more than weapons , aircraft and the like . Procurement teams at the UK ’ s Ministry of Defence ( MoD ) buy a wide variety of products and services ranging from clothing to satellite communication systems , from workforce provision to construction of buildings .
The MoD currently spends approximately £ 19.6bn ( US $ 26.45bn ) with third parties on a diverse range of products and services . This amounts to 40-45 % of total government spend with third parties , with the UK government one of only five NATO member states to meet the alliance ’ s goal of spending 2 % of GDP on defence annually .
