The influential economist John Maynard Keynes famously once said : “ The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones .”

While Keynes fundamentally transformed the theory and practice of macroeconomics , his oft-cited statement resonates with the way in which civilisation has gone and continues to go about generating power . Keynes died in 1946 , but fast-forward more than 70 years and the reliance on oil , gas and coal has barely changed , although at the time of his death the picture looked like it might radically transform .
